Email Safety Rules - Tips and Solution For Safe Email

Following are the email safety rules and measures that must be taken to ensure the safety of ourselves and our family:

Teach child to give their email address only to the people they already know and trust: Children should not give their email address while chatting or post their email address on their blogs. Children’s email must not on their online profile, and they not to give their email addresses using any internet mechanism; you may never know when someone is spoofing their online conversation and get hold of their email address(es).

Avoid opening attachments: Many viruses are spread through email attachments. Children must seek parents permission before opening any email attachments, and parents must verify that the particular attachment is run through an anti-virus.

Not to reply Spam Messages: Replying spam messages increases the chances to receive more spam.

Learn to Block Sender: Children and Parents must learn how to block email coming from the senders that they do not know or trust. Most of the email services, provide features to block unwanted emails, spams and email senders.

Create an email address that does not reveal children information: It is recommended that parents themselves create an email address for their children, and use Internet Service Provider (ISP) rather than free email services. As mentioned earlier, email address must not reveal any information about the child. For example “Hockeyplr13” is not a good email address because it reveals that the child likes hockey and probably his/her age is 13. Online Predators are quick in noticing it and use it for their own benefit. In short, it's not important to have a cool email address, boring email address that does not reveal any information weighs far better than a cool email address revealing personal information. Having an ISP based email address also gives added advantage to parents in a way that parents can always track their children’s email by asking ISP to forward their child emails to their (parents) designated email address.

In addition to adhering the above mentioned email safety rules and measures, internet filter software should be use. Internet filters provides safety features which are not available with ISP email service, feature such as the ability to block emails containing special words which are inappropriate for children.

Parents should also observe their child's internet activity and what kind of email their children receive and sent. Monitoring software help parents to monitor their child's internet activities efficiently and effectively.
